What’s The Process To Build An ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit)?

Not all building processes are the same. In fact, some are just better than others. Our process to build an accessory dwelling unit stands out from the traditional builders and contractors in many different ways. The first is that we provide end-to-end turnkey service, which means that we take care of every detail from beginning to end.

Second, we use modular building construction instead of on-site construction. Not only does this method improve the durability and quality of your ADU compared to stick-built structures, but it also reduces project site traffic, noise, safety risk, and of course, neighborhood disruption. Since most of the construction of your new ADU is built in a factory, there will be a limited amount of people on your property. This also significantly reduces the labor costs for your project. Another benefit is that there won’t be any weather delays on your project, since everything is done indoors. All the trades needed to build your ADU are in one location, with professional engineering teams overseeing the entire manufacturing process. Modular building construction can be completed about 50% sooner or faster than traditional construction methods.

At ADORE Homes, we build premier accessory dwelling units in as little as 8 to 14 weeks, which means you can quickly get a return on your investment.

Let’s dive into the details that come with our strategy for building the best ADUs in the Bay Area.

Everything You Need To Know About The Process To Build An Accessory Dwelling Unit

When you’re ready to save lots of time, money, and overall hassle on the process to build an accessory dwelling unit, specifically in California, you’ve come to the right place. We think that we’ve perfected the process of bringing custom ADUs to life. Our goal is to be fast, safe, clean, and stress-free. As we mentioned above, our approach to building is designed with you in mind, and we get you in your new ADU in as little as eight weeks. Traditional construction typically takes 32 weeks to build, and they haven’t developed a process that runs smoothly and efficiently. Plus, that time can be significantly delayed if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Read on as we discuss everything else you need to know about ADORE Home’s unique strategy.

Step 1 – The Design Process

After an initial consultation with us, the first step is to decide which model works best for you and your needs. We’ll walk through all the design detail decisions you’ll make so you know exactly what the end result will be. ADORE Homes offers modern and sleek designs that have been brought to life by one of the Bay Area’s renowned designers, who have spent time doing extensive research to provide the optimal design. Each unit we make is built to the highest standard and comply with even the strictest building codes. We also offer top-quality finishes, fixtures, and appliances.

This entire design process can be squared away in one day.

Step 2 – Acquiring Permits

After we nail down all the design details you want for your ADU, the next step is acquiring the proper permits. We’ve developed a deep understanding of how the local permitting process works, and we have relationships with various cities. The permit process is when you can sit back and relax – we’ll take care of everything for you.

This step usually takes around 6-8 weeks.

Step 3 – Manufacturing and Site Preparation

The minute we obtain the building permits, we will start building your ADU in our network of reputable factories. At the same time as your unit is getting built, we’ll prepare your unit’s designated area at your property to make sure it’s ready for installation. That includes laying the foundation and creating all the necessary trenching. Other construction companies drag this process out for up to 16 weeks, but not us. We want to make the entire process seamless for both you and your neighbors.

Our modular buildings are constructed in a highly controlled environment, and they are always up to code. Each home is permitted and then inspected, just like a traditional structure would be. Since the process involves the entire unit and its components to travel to you, the construction and inspection standards are very high. We need your unit to withstand the travel, which results in tighter structures, better durability, and superior quality than on-site constructed buildings.

Step 4 – Delivery & Installation

The next step of the process is delivery and installation. ADORE Homes will deliver your awesome new unit from our factory to your home and install it within two days. At the time of installation, it’s only been 10-14 weeks since our initial design consultation.

Step 5 – Occupancy

Once we finish installing your custom ADU, you can immediately set it up for tenants or family or whatever you need it for. We usually recommend that you wait at least a week from install before you or your tenants move into the unit to ensure that everything gets prepped correctly.
